Field Notes

Photographs and essays on craft, attention and the working rhythm of makers.

Black-and-white misty mountain ridge behind dry grasses

Overview

Field Notes pairs six photo essays with six short pieces of writing, each following a maker through an ordinary working day — a potter, a tailor, a baker, a bookbinder, a florist and a luthier.

The words and pictures were made side by side, neither illustrating the other. Together they argue for slowness: for watching a whole process instead of skimming its highlights.

Approach

One full day per subject, available light, minimal styling. I stayed out of the way until the work itself suggested the frame — hands mid-task, rooms mid-morning. Direction was limited to “carry on, I’ll keep up.”

  • 6 makers, 6 full-day shoots
  • 6 essays written alongside the edit
  • Released as a seasonal journal series

From the series
